Sara J's is my absolute most favorite restaurant. This has been a regular stop for my family on vacation for the past 10 years. We have been known to go here up to three times during a weeks visit. Sara J's is not a small restaurant. It has a nice inside dining area and then a covered deck with ceiling fans during the summer and heaters during the fall/winter. The way to prove for yourself that this is a good place is to show up any time after 5:00 during prime time or off season and there will be a long line waiting to get in. A lot of locals eat here as well as tourists. We have been when there is as long of a wait as 1 hr 45 min. My favorite meal on the menu is their sauteed shrimp. They are amazing. It is a PILE of shrimp that have been sauteed in butter, lemon juice, wine and other seasonings. They also do a sauteed scallops the same way. I would have to say that the top meals are the Sara J's Special which is a fried seafood combination, the ribeye and sauteed shrimp or the sauteed shrimp or scallop meals that I mentioned above. All of the meals start out with a basket of delicious hush puppies and honey butter. Most of the meals start out with your choice of salad or homemade cole slaw. I definitely highly recommend this restaurant to people visiting the Myrtle Beach area.

The food was really good. However they do not have as wide of a selection as they used to and the prices have certainly increased since the last visit. Oyster stew was amazing and the stuffed shrimp were awesome!

Six of us tried to have dinner here. Two of the shrimp dishes were absolutely inedible. The other four meals were barely average. We returned the meals and the manager ask what was wrong and what else we would like. We said there was nothing else they had that we would even be willing to try. Manager became very unruly about giving any concession. Offered to pay for all the sides that we did eat, but she absolutely refused. Was an extremely unpleasant experience and a lot of money for nothing.

Went to Sara J's for supper today. The service and food were excellent. It is a lil pricy. But, for the quality of the food and service, it was well worth it! Left full and satisfied. It is definitely better than many of the seafood buffets that cost as much or more. Adult plates ranged from $15-25 (not including the lobster that is higher, of course) I had the flounder, fried shrimp, and deviled crab. Wife and daughter had the shrimp scampi. All were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The boys both got cheeseburgers from the kids menu. The burgers were huge and were only $6.99 with a side included. Overall, this is a restaurant that we will definitely be returning to!

Sara J's should be rated 3 or 4 dollar signs. It is extremely expensive for what you get. And, don't expect that level of quality food either. Server was friendly. Sitting outside overlooking the sound was pleasant. This is the only reason for the 2 stars otherwise I'd have rated it one star.

If you are looking for good local seafood don't look for it at Sara J. I asked for the fish with crab, the waitress said it was frozen pre-made tilapia. How local is that! I decided to order shrimp and scallops. Small and rubbery. My son-in-law felt safe in ordering peel and eat shrimp. The shrimp was about cocktail size, served pre-peeled, boiled, unseasoned, in a soup bowl. Very disappointing. The place has dated decor , over priced, mediocre food and a long wait. Definitely targeting the Mac Fish crowd.

Great meal, friendly service in a picturesque location! We were very pleased with our meals and the service provided.

Horrible seafood. The only good thing they have is a view of the marsh. Overpriced, overcooked, and not local seafood! I recommend almost any other place in the area! We had overcooked scallops, overcooked shrimp. The best meal we had out of a party of 9 was the kids burger.

This was heartbreakingly disappointing. I have fond memories of enjoying this restaurant as a child...teenager...young adult... with my family. Tonight, I brought my family back to the restaurant that I recalled being very classy and well done. This evening, and our $600 meal (for 12), was gross. The food was mediocre at best. We couldn't hear each other speaking because the atrocious live band was so loud. The service was a joke. I just could not believe that the place I once considered the classiest spot for dinner in the area had turned into a Joe's Crab Shack. Horrible.

We went after it was suggested by the staff at our hotel. We hoped for a nice atmosphere, with a great view and good food. We got mediocre, uninspired food, a view through plastic tarps, unknowledgeable staff, and every plate is close to or over $20. We are from New England and know good seafood but this misses the mark, especially at this price point. We ordered a seafood combo, scallops and chicken parm (bc one of us couldn't eat seafood). The seafood combo included a stuffed crab but the staff had no idea what type of crab it was before ordering and they admitted it was bought frozen premade. The chicken parm was supposed to be two chicken breasts and garlic bread, and it was two pieces about half the size of one chicken breast with a piece of ordinary white bread with garlic butter thrown on. We all agreed a visit to red lobster would have been better.

Terrible experience! The waitress literally came to ask us like 4 times within 5 minutes if we were ready to order, even after we told her it was our first time at the restaurant. Mediocre mixed drinks made with syrupy mix instead of real fruit. Greasy fried foods. The hush puppies are very sweet-- not expecting that. Didn't suit out taste at all. We knew there would be a long wait-- nearly an hour on a weekend night. The best part of the whole experience was sitting out by the marsh listening to live music while we waited for our table.

From what I've read here and judging from my inlaws undying loyalty, it seems like Sara J's was once a good place to eat. However, having eaten there two times i can say it is a place I would be happy to never waste my time or money on again. Yes, it has an inlet view, but so do most of the excellent restaurants at Murrells Inlet nearby. Overlooking the kitschy and tired decor, I asked about a beer menu. Wrong. Apparently the craft brew trend hasn't reached Sara J's, which should tell you something about their food...ie, people who appreciate fine beer also appreciate excellent food. But folks, this is the Miller lite crowd. And though they are packed, the clientele is just as demanding of their food as the quality of their beer. I had a fried seafood platter because that's the first thing I want when I go to the beach. My expectations were already adjusted down but I had to ask about the shrimp. Were they local? Were they frozen? Yes, they were local. Thank God. I mean that's the least you expect. Yes, they do freeze them until ready for use. Wrong wrong. Freezing destroys the texture of shrimp. Why on earth does anyone at the beach ever need to freeze shrimp? For all of that the shrimp were the best thing on the plate. I give them a 7. Oysters were small, but this is July, so I'll give them a break. The scallops were large, but tough and chewy....a serious disappointment. Their homemade cocktail and tartar sauces were sugary sweet... I guess it would suit the tastebuds of children and old people. My nephew had chicken he did not eat. He said it was tough. One in our party had some spicy shrimp. The portion was small, but she was trying to give it away. One of my red flags when it comes to these seafood joints is a menu that tries to get too fancy with seafood. In my experience it seems like a way to overcharge and hide subpar quality seafood in sugary or spicy renditions. Great seafood needs very little in the way of additions and if handled properly speaks for itself. Overall, Sara J's seems like the kind of place where they are satisfied to pull it out of deep freeze, open up a can or add lots of sugar and it apparently works for them because the miller lite crowd really packs the place. If you are like me and love real seafood prepared fresh and simply, try Lee's inlet Kitchen or almost any restaurant in nearby Murrel's Inlet. Your tastebuds will thank you ! Ps: I was checking out the five star review just below mine. When it became clear the reviewer was comparing Sara J's to the many seafood buffets along the strip, the reason for his 5 star review became instantly clear. Anything would rate high compared to the ubiquitous buffets....they are dreadful...just dreadful.

Overpriced and poorly prepared. The house salad was about the same as a waffle house salad, all lettuce. The shrimp and grits were under-cooked and the seem to have taken the creative step of dumping a a can of tomatoes on top to hide the flaws. The sauteed shrimp was overcooked and salty. This was entirely too much money for no to poor quality.

I'm not sure what everyone that gave this place below 4 stars is talking about. I've eaten at a lot of restaurants but I really loved this place. The service was amazing- the waitress was the best I've ever had. The food was great. Really enjoyed the shrimp cocktail and crab soup. Only downfall was wait time to be seated Would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this restaurant.

We were told to visit by a local. We got hush puppies while we waited for our food. Good cornbread type. The salad that comes with the entrees was a good size. I got the ribeye- was cooked just the way I wanted and tasted great!! Mom got the blackened grouper and loved the cook of the fish...also liked the sauce that came with it. A key lime/mango Dad got the seafood sampler plate with fish, crab & shrimp. He said fish was ok but loved the shrimp & crab. Cocktail sauce was great. Overall we were very happy!! Great place!!

Disappointed in the food. We eat out once or twice a week. After driving by for over a year we thought that it must be good as it always seems crowded. Well, it must be crowded because of the great location as our meals were ok at best. I had a rib eye and shrimp platter. The steak was decent but shrimp were boring and not very fresh. It was served with garlic bread (soft white bread, with melted butter and garlic flavor..it was mushy and gross) My hubby ordered seafood casserole which he described as "alright" I tasted it and agreed. In summary, we probably won't return as there are so many GREAT restaurants in the area.

Great view. Food ? Great calamari , as good as I've ever had. Salad, terrible, sautéed shrimp and scollops, so so , rather have a smaller portion but spend a bit more time on the cooktop. Service was fantastic though, a really great waitress. I'll go back but definently try something different.

My family enjoyed the food. The wait was 1.5 hours when we got there so we knew the food would be good. We loved the hush puppies, blackened Mahi, salmon, & stuffed fish.

I had the fried flounder ($19) which was plentiful but nothing exciting, my friend had the low-country boil (approx $21) which looked fantastic: a great bowl of shrimp, clams, potatoes and corn. Another friend had the stuffed shrimp (approx $20) and it was also pretty average. The prices are a little steep for the quality. The service was pretty good considering how crowded the restaurant was and the place was good for large groups. Ambiance is better for groups and families than a romantic dinner. If you can sit outside, they have great views of the marsh. Overall, not for me, but I may recommend for others.

Tourist Trap, no local seafood, mostly frozen, fried, microwaved and extremely overpriced. We stopped on a recommendation, didn't have the chance to check YELP! before sitting down. The views are good, the service is fast, for the most part the food was horrible. Hush Puppies were fine. The salads were all hearts, 2 cucumber slices, 2 cherry tomatoes. The children had the grilled cheese sandwiches, Thick Texas toast bread with a slice of cheese, barely melted. The Flounder was so over fried there was no flakiness left, hard rubbery even ketchup couldn't make the dish palatable. The pasta marinara with scallops and shrimp was soggy. The plate was drenched with marinara sauce, covering any taste of the shrimp. The scallops were mushy....

Tourist trap. Frozen seafood. Speed round to turn the tables as fast as possible. Amazing view.

No reservations so if you don't get there early - you are out of luck. Went there because local family members enjoyed it, but husband and I weren't impressed. Food was okay, nothing spectacular or special. Had the look/taste/feel of microwaved food that was prepared way ahead of time in preparation for the "rush". Got so busy that it was hard to get refills or special items (ketchup, tartar sauce) - drink order was messed up. Will avoid this one.

On a weekend trip to the beach, almost drove by to another restaurant, but decided to try Sara J's. Big Mistake. Wife had 2 Lobster Tails that were over cooked, and seemed to be cooked from frozen. Drink Orders were wrong, and the Stuffed Shrimp seemed cooked from frozen with a side of yellow rice pilaf that came from a box. Save your money and go to Captain D's...the quality would be better.

Sara J's was recommended by friends and tried it last night to celebrate a birthday. The dining room was hot so we opted for the porch and with an outside temperature of 70, they had heaters running. The Oyster Rockefeller were the worst I've ever had; oysters on the half shell with Cheez Wiz poured over, horrible. The Seafood Combination platter was crowed onto a salad size oval plate with baked potato and slaw in separate containers. It could have been a nice looking platter arranged on a larger platter with everything on one plate; however, as perfectly cooked as it was, it was cooked in old rancid oil. The smell of the oil got me before the seafood did. The fish, shrimp and oyster were lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. Maybe it was just an off night for the oil. My husband asked for extra butter and the waitress literally tossed it on our table as she rushed off to speak to people she obviously knew, who had just been seated. We are locals and probably will stick to other tried and true restaurants in the future. Maybe we just hit an off night or maybe they depend on tourists for their success. It will not be a repeat experience for us.

Niceness of restaurant and staff is the only reason I'm able to give this restaurant 2 stars. The waitress and host were very nice and attentive. The food on the other hand was not so good. I thought the shrimp tasted like it was dipped into some kind of cleaning product. They were definitely not fresh. Kind of sad to not have fresh shrimp while on the coast. The steak was ok, but nothing to write home about. The hushpuppies were really good. I think if this restaurant could get some fresh seafood, it would be a huge hit. I really want to like this place, but the food has to get better for that to happen for me.

Disappointment on taste, quality of prep & quantity of food. Plan on not finding much less than $20/entree. 4/5 at our table had the same feeling, the one who did like theirs ordered steak which tasted very good. Avoid Oyster Rockefeller which was mostly spinach, bacon, cream sauce with literally microscopic oysters. $21 Stuffed shrimp "specialty" was 4 shrimp and side of rice. I think they push the hush puppies to fill diners up. Server was friendly and decor nice but we felt taken advantage of; however, the place had a packed waiting room, go figure, tourists at the beach... I hate chains but red lobster would be better. [Edit: moved my orig review from incorrect restaurant profile]

We went there and ordered drinks and their liquor order didn't come in and they just had rot gut vodka so we left. The decor was very dated- looked like it catered to Senior citizens and I'm one but wouldn't eat there. I'm suspicious when most of the offerings were Sara J's special recipe with no further explanation- I wouldn't recommend it.

I definately did not enjoy my Sara J's experience. The restaurant itself is very nice. A good atmosphere, nice decorations, etc. The service was good. My only complaint was the food. I ordered fried shrimp and they were the greasiest fried shrimp I've ever eaten. Once I got past the grease explosion, their taste was unlike anything I've ever had. But not in a good way. It was an awful taste that I just wanted out of my mouth. So since I was with friends and didn't want to offend anybody I said I was full after three or four shrimp and asked for a to-go box. My wife was equally unimpressed with her food. I don't remember what she got, but I'm fairly certain it was fried too. She being unoriginal simply followed my lead and used the "I'm full so I'll eat it later" excuse. We ended up feeding the leftovers to the seagulls on the beach.

2 stars is generous only because everyone who works there is so nice and the view was neat. Shrimp & scallops were heavy in oil and old bay. Crab cakes were ok but left something to be desired. Mango martini cocktail was crazy sweet and undrinkable. Almost all patrons were 65+

We arrived early and there was a crowd, but fortunately there were a few open tables. We chose to sit outside. The atmosphere was typical of any fried seafood place, outdoor seating is nice. Unfortunately the food was not so good. Our meal began with chewy hushpuppies that tasted like they'd been reheated in a microwave. Salad was mostly bad, brown iceberg lettuce. My wife ordered sautéed shrimp and scallops-- definitely not fresh and so salty they were inedible. This was served with overcooked, over-salted rice. I ordered grilled catfish-- one of the few non-fried items on the menu. It was OK, but the two accompanying sauces were entirely too sweet. I tried to switch to tartar sauce, but it was also too sweet. My side order of steamed mixed vegetables was fine, but nothing special. Based on our experience tonight I would not recommend this place to anyone.

We arrived at 6:30 on a April Saturday evening and were seated right away. The waiter answered questions and fulfilled requests for extra napkins and drink refills, but seemed preoccupied and didn't go the extra mile. The menu was limited - mostly fried seafood with only a couple of choices for grilled. The fried seafood was not crisp, and the cocktail sauce was more like sweet ketchup. One bite of the hush puppies was enough for me. They leave the tarter sauce and cocktail sauce on the table in squeeze bottles which is a health risk. For $36 for 2 meals and iced tea (including tax), it rates as a poor experience. We'll try someplace else next time.

The good reviews and buzzing parking lot caught my attention, the quality food and service brought me in twice during one week. The eponymous Sara J's platter is the hugest steal on the menu. Okay- it is fried, but a slab of fish, pile of shrimp, oysters, and scallops along w/ fries hushpuppies, slaw is what you get for under $20.00. And the portion is GI-NORM-OUS: enough for two .Calamari, and kids meal were other things we tried -pretty good too. Mango pie delish. While on vaykay, eat, drink and be merry . Diet another day.

we stopped at 7:45 on a monday. We wanted to have a drink and then dinner. Asked the hostess when they stopped serving because I hate to be the pain that sits down at 5 minutes to close. She said they had no set time, when it slows down they stop. So in we went ordered a drink but went to our table after 10 minutes, we just couldn't relax at the bar. Well, the server was nice enough, but we ordered, were served and on our way out in less than 30 minutes. they were clearing tables with such gusto that I'm surprised dishes didn't break. rush. rush. the food was ok but the feeling of getting rushed was overpowering - my husband got the seafood platter, which he said was soggy, not crisp. I got the crab soup and shrimp salad. We were offered dessert but, the staff was really in high clean up and close by then. i wish they had said, we are not serving after 8 and we would have moved on. We'll give it another shot, but much earlier.
